Greetings
Busan Architecture Festival
Welcome to Busan Architecture Festival.
부산국제건축문화제 조직위원장 서병수
  • Looking back to the history of humankind, we can see that at the end of an era, its symbolic culture is created and particularly architecture leaves buildings that represent the era. In the ancient era, Egypt begot the mysterious Pyramids and Greece brought forth the utmost architectural artwork, the Parthenon. The medieval era saw the appearance of beautiful architecture through the Gothic style, then leading to the proto-modern eras of Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo styles, all of which have constituted the great history of architecture.

Also in the modern society, architecture has great power. The urban space full of well-constructed buildings improves the quality of human life and makes the city loved by visitors. However, mistakenly constructed buildings remain monstrosities tarnishing the image of the city. The famous critical urbanist Jane Jacobs denounced the New York City full of skyscrapers as a concrete jungle that lost its humanity. In contrast, the Sydney Opera House sits softly on the beach in an elegant form which is a lovable destination that attracts many tourists from around the world and impresses them with the graceful status of Sydney.
  • How can we make great architecture that improves the value of the city? Any architect can never do that alone. What made Barcelona the great home of architecture was the fact that Antoni Gaudí had Güell as his client. What enabled Tadao Ando to transform Naoshima, which had been polluted by industrial waste, into the island of art was the sponsorship by Soichiro Fukutake. An architect who has both faith and capability and a sponsor who trusts the architect create together such architectural heritage as worth being recorded in history.

Created in this way, architecture receives the attention and love from citizens so as to acquire shinier values. Today, a city is the space citizens care for together as its owners. After all, the power of sustaining good architecture and good cities comes from citizens.

Our Busan Architecture Festival will serve as the bridge for citizens to rightly see and lavish affection on architecture and the city. In order to foster a livable and healthy city loved by everyone, please give unsparing support to our festival!

    Thank you.
